Thankful Thursday

This week, Thankful Thursday is difficult. I’m having a rough time. I’m not meeting any of my goals, really. I haven’t been running or writing. Hell. I’ve hardly even been reading. My work days have been very exhausting. When I get home, I really have to drag myself to the shower. I am fatigued by the people I work with. I am convinced that there are all different brands of crazy. Nothing is good enough. Nothing is done fast enough.

Really, everyone is stressed. The event is in 3 weeks. It seems that the committee/board does not handle pressure well. At all. They all fold, crumble, or become as stiff as a board. It’s ridiculous. I’m not the type to freak out. No matter what. The world could be falling apart around me, but I would maintain my cool, and think about the next step. I think it freaks them out that I don’t freak out. It must translate as I am nonchalant and nothing moves me. It’s not that. It’s just that I will not be shaken, and I will not fall apart.

Here are some examples (and feel free to skip them if you like) of the silly things that have been going on and piling up in my mind:

-They asked me to produce a weekly report stating what I have done all week, and what I plan to do the next week. I have done this in MS Word and emailed it to them every Friday. A few months in, one of them emailed me asking that I do not use attachments, but put it in the body of the email as the attachment creates too much work. Fine. I still did it in Word for my own records, and copied and pasted it to the body of the emails. A few months ago, they all got gung-ho about Google Docs (which I HATE). Fine. They decided that sending a bunch of separate threads of emails is crazy. Let’s just share everything in Google Docs. Whatever. So I’ve been uploading my reports to GoogleDocs and sending email notifications of it. Yesterday, S asked me, “What happened to your reports?” Uh… What?! Apparently, for months now, they have all been under the impression that I just stopped doing them. She wanted to know why I stopped sending them individual emails. WHAAAAAT?! Excuse me while I put myself in timeout.

-I’ve been organizing the delivery/collection of promo items from sponsors to be included in participant bags. One of the sponsors I’ve been dealing with for MONTHS just dropped a bomb on me. Their promo items won’t be delivered until next week Thursday. We’re stuffing the bags on Monday and Tuesday. This is a problem. Guess what. The committee thinks this is my fault. Forget that I have called the sponsor numerous times AND emailed with the deadlines. Forget that I left messages for them from Thursday of last week until Tuesday while they were away. Forget all of that. It is MY fault because *I* didn’t translate the urgency to them. HA! I emailed the overall coordinator who is receiving all items since we are stuffing bags at her house. It said, “Good morning [Woman], I just received a response from [Sponsor] on the [promo item]. They will be delivered next week Thursday.” This email is a huge problem because I did not state explicitly that this a problem and does not work with our current schedule for bag stuffing. Why is that necessary again? Do we not all know the schedule? They can’t CHANGE the delivery date MAGICALLY, ok? We have to work with what we’ve got. We may have to drop that item in the bags later, or hand them out with the bags, or have participants collect them at the start line. No, it’s not as seamless, but it CAN WORK. What will not work is harping on the problem.

-They were under the impression that I have not been checking in on the signs we’re having done/revamped. In reality, I have emailed him at least twice per day. I have been calling him at least once per day. He now answer the phone, “Hi, Alicia, from [organization name].” I told S (who called the meeting) that I have been in constant communication with him. She had no response so A (who was just sitting there, doing whatever, listening – I have no idea why she was even there other than to be entertained) said, “Yes, but we don’t know that you’re doing these things. You never told us.” Ok. So in addition to the weekly reports, I should create a GoogleDoc detailing the time I spend emailing/calling people? Please. Do not do this to me.

You know what… At the end of the day, I am thankful for a few things.

  • I know myself.
  • I know that I am competent.
  • I know that I am intelligent.
  • I do not feel the need to overcompensate for issues that people have that really have nothing to do with me.
  • I know my worth.
  • I know that I deserve to be treated with respect.
  • It is not my fault when someone else screws up. It doesn’t matter if it is a committee member, a founder, a sponsor, a supplier, or a participant. I will not hold myself responsible for another person’s mess.
  • I continuously go above and beyond the call of duty.
  • All of my work is a reflection of me, my abilities, and my work ethic. What other people see or know me to be doing is not. That is not the entire picture.
  • There is no need for me to detail everything that I have done when my tasks are clear, and completed as given.
  • There are more opportunities available to me than I can imagine.
  • I have to sit in the driver’s seat of my life. That includes my career.
  • All that glitters is not gold.
  • I need to find a way out.
  • I need to be prudent. My next few decisions must be made carefully.

Enough about me! How about you? What are you thankful for?

Thankful Thursday

More busy days, y’all!

Monday and Tuesday whipped by like nobody’s business. Yesterday seemed to drag a little, but that was fine. There was a lot to be done. I still have quite a few things to wrap up before the end of the work week. I feel like one of those wind-up toys. Spinning, spinning, spinning, then… Slooooowlyyyyy spiiiiinniiiiing. I have to finish everything before the wind-up power is gone and I’ve slowed to a halt.

Anyway, it’s THURSDAAAAAYYYYY! I’m thankful for:

  • Bright colours
  • Take-out dinner last night (Does NOT happen often)
  • Dessert
  • Cool run spots
  • The world of information at my fingertips (aka internet)
  • The weekend coming up
  • My Neo2 (will be put to work this evening between work and a meeting)
  • Breakfast for dinner (tonight!)
  • New shoes (bought last weekend)
  • Planners/Calendars
  • Breathing exercises (They really DO have an amazing effect)
  • Good books
  • Critique group
  • Discovering two great tv shows: Modern Family and Downton Abbey
Here’s a song that has a really interesting song, humorous lyrics, and a strange feel-goodness about it:
I neeeeeed to get it in iTunes and on my Running playlist. LOVE it.

Lots of questions for you today. Answer one, some, or all of ’em in comments. 🙂 What’s going on in your world? Is your week flying by, or dragging on? What are you thankful for? Is there a song you’re really diggin’ right now?

I Am Woman

It’s Thursday, and you already know that I’m thankful. In addition to Thursdayness, there’s WOMANNESS today! It’s International Women’s Day, so it only seems right to be thankful for my womanhood.

I’ve always identified as a woman FIRST. Not as a race, nationality, religion, age, or level of education. Girl. Woman. Lady. Female. Always.

This is a ladies only style of body?! Well, YIPPITY-DOO-DAAAH! EEEEEEE!

Even though I’m a woman:

  • I wear pants pretty much every day
  • I do planks, push-ups, and other strength/muscle-building activities
  • I eat as much as I want
  • I have cake and ice cream late at night
  • I love a woman
  • I keep my hair super short
  • I refuse to wear makeup every day
  • I don’t shave my legs every couple of days
  • I refuse to wear pantyhose unless I’m going to an older person’s funeral
  • I hold a full time job
  • I do not like puppies, kittens, red roses, or the colour pink

As I woman, I am not criticized for:

  • Wearing skirts, dresses, makeup, or heels (on the rare occasions that I feel like it)
  • Having my nails done
  • Keeping my eyebrows groomed
  • Owning pink things (Bright pink is the only one that I can tolerate)

Because I am a woman:

  • I can give birth to more than ideas, plans, and art… I can bring life into the world
  • I know what it’s like to be underestimated (and to prove people wrong)
  • I hear cat calls, kissy noises, and exclamations like, “OY! SEXY!” every day
  • I’m often told that I am beautiful
  • Some men think they have the right to touch me (and they are sadly mistaken)
  • There are lots of expectations of me (that may or may not be met)
  • I get away with a few things
  • People try to fit me into a box (which could never work!)
  • It’s upsetting to people that I love a woman
  • I am a target
  • I always carry pepper spray and a stun gun
  • Society tells me to be careful how I dress, because that choice determines how I should be treated
A lot of things come along with being a woman. There is good, and there is bad. There are things that I like, and things that annoy me. We do not all agree, and we do not all live the same lifestyles. Among us are feminists, atheists, Christians, Muslims, lesbians, bi-sexuals, members of parliament, presidential candidates, divas, mechanics, lawyers, doctors, artists, stay-at-home moms, bloggers, writers, runners, yoga-enthusiasts, bad drivers (lol), soccer moms, nomads, minimalists, and extremists. We don’t all like each others. We aren’t all friends. The thing that we have in common is that WE ARE WOMEN. We share struggles and triumphs. We sympathize and empathize with each other. We champion some of the same causes. We make mistakes. We work hard. We do what we can. Because we can. Now, LET ME HEAR YOU ROOOOOARRRRR!

As Helen Reddy put it:

I am strong (strong)
I am invincible (invincible)
I am woman

You can bend but never break me
’cause it only serves to make me
More determined to achieve my final goal
And I come back even stronger
Not a novice any longer
’cause you’ve deepened the conviction in my soul

This one is for all you crazies out there:

I’m a Bitch <— I have no idea why this won’t embed. *sighs*

Why are you happy/thankful to be a woman?

Thankful Thursday

Things I’m thankful for:

  • ABC (Awesome Blog Content) Award from Nicole at Three 31. I don’t have to tell you how great it feels to have followers – commenting followers – on a blog, do I? I didn’t think it could get much better than that, but there are AWARDS. And they come from followers who actually LIKE you/your blog. I love it. Awards are great for boosting blog-esteem, making others feel good, and spotlighting other blogs you follow. I can’t decide if my favourite part is sharing the award with others, or seeing who others share it with because finding new blogs rocks. The people I’m passing this on to are listed at the end of this post.
  • My March and (first part of) April goals/timelines are on my whiteboard. It reflects what is in my planner. I have a LOT of writing to, and now I feel like I can stay on track.
  • My Neo2 arrived! I don’t have it in my possession yet, but hope to meet up with my brother to get it today. How much more will I be writing? A LOT more!
  • Steakout tickets for Saturday. It’s not really that big a deal for most people, but I looove steakouts! Hahaha. Something about getting a steak dinner for $10, knowing that the money is going to a charity, someone’s medical fund, someone’s tuition… Everything about it is great.
  • Red Cross Fair on Saturday. So, basically, after stuffing myself with the steakout lunch, I’ll head over to the fair. My sisters used to take me to the Red Cross Fair every year, secretly. Why was it a secret? Far too much to explain in this post. BUT. I can go without it being a secret, and maybe they’ll show up to. I LOVE fairs. They always have yummy things like sky juice (gin, coconut water, and sweet milk), conch fritters, and other bad, bad things. Hahaha.
  • M&Ms. I left my lunch in the fridge at home this morning. Fail. M&Ms though? Always a pack in my bag.
  • I can see 10% more of my desk than i did yesterday. Operation: Organization. Getting there!
  • Finding the Color Run! (I wish I could remember which blog I saw it on, but I don’t.) It’s a 5k run, and volunteers spray participants with color at each kilometre. *squeals with joy and excitement* I haaave to do it! Definitely the one in Orlando (December) because it’s close to The Bahamas, but it would be nice to do it in New York in August. Hmmm…
  • Fiiiiinally finding the coolest bookmarks EVER. The only one I have is “Believe” and I owned “Dream” and “Let Love Bloom.” One of them is somewhere in my aunt’s house, and the other is probably in Canada, owned by some random stranger. *sighs* Anyway, I found the manufacturer or something. I hope I can figure out how to order them. They’re cool! Interlocking magnetic bookmarks. Genius.

And now, for the sharing of the ABC Award… Here we go:

Now it’s your turn! What are you thankful for?

Thankful Thursday

It’s Thursday. You know how I roll on Thursdays, don’t ya? *does the dance of thankfulness*

Here we go, one thing for every finger:

  • Awesome friends (and cousins) who step in whenever they’re needed
  • Last night’s dinner (Which reminds me that I was supposed to have leftovers for breakfast. Oh, well. Appetizer tonight.)
  • New running tanks (They feel SO GOOD!)
  • Weekend fun coming right up!
  • My new nook cover

    Liiiiime spankin' green! ❤

  • Great writing resources online, including blogs and writing/critique groups
  • Babe’s support
  • Neo2 on the way, and should be here by Tuesday! WOO!
  • Chocolate cake (which I reeeally hope they have today)
  • Lots of work to keep me busy
Off topic, but read this post on 20 life-altering concepts that you can embrace TODAY. Includes:
  1. Simplify everything
  2. Let go of attachments
  3. Focus on the task at hand
  4. Action is the answer
Read it, read it, read it. Maybe all of it isn’t for you, but there’s probably something there that speaks to you. Something that you can grasp and run with to make your life better. *does masterful tap steps* CHAL-LUUUUUUUNGE!

What are you thankful for today?

Thankful Thursday: Guest Posting

Happy Thursday to you! Hope your week is going well, and you’ve found at least 3 good reasons to be thankful. Whether you’re thankful to God, the universe, a family member, a good friend, or just plain ol’ thankful, I hope you are. I’m thankful for love, blogging, and blog buddies.

I usually have a nice little list of things I’m thankful for. Not this week. And it’s not because I’m not thankful. I AM. For SO much. But it’s the week of looooove. I’m in love with the most amazing person in the world, and I’m sharing the short version of the story of us. To read the story, show some love to Victoria over at Victoria Writes. She’s a blog buddy of mine. We follow and comment on each other’s blog posts. And we’re both writers. She’s REALLY good. So when you hop over there to read my guest post, be sure to check out some of her posts. Spread the (blog) looooove!

To my regular blog readers: There’s a little (or big) surprise at the end of the guest post. I’ve been keeping the secret since Christmas day, and decided to unleash it and let it run free, but that’s where you have to go to find out the big (or little?) awesome secret!

Vix, thanks a mil for the opportunity to guest post. I know it’s not always easy to let someone else cook in your kitchen. I appreciate it. Much blog love to ya! 🙂

Thankful Thursday!

It’s a busy day for me, y’all. I have lots to do. Including writing. I have 3 articles to write for work before the end of the day, and (of course) my own project. Did I tell y’all that in addition to short stories, I’m writing a novel? I may share more info later, but I may keep it offline for a while longer. I think I need it to take more shape first. Alright, so let’s start this Thankful Thursday party! WOO!

I’m thankful for:

  • Amazing dinners that I go home to. Babe gets down in the kitchen pretty much every night so that I don’t have to get home after a long day at work to cook for us. And no complaints either. The other night, we had a great dish of beef strips, mashed potato, asparagus and carrots. It was sooo good. Last night, we had chicken fettucine. WITH mushrooms. Looooove!
  • A great weekend. See Weekend Recap for details.
  • Getting back into running. I haven’t gone all week because it’s been ridiculously busy and I’ve been super tired, but I’m back on it tomorrow.
  • Nail appointment today. I really don’t like having them done, but they’re sooo pretty after. 🙂
  • Improvement in water consumption
  • Music. Especially by Nerina Pallot, Scala, Sarah Blasko, and Austra at the moment.
  • Special treats. Like chocolate cake, ice cream, warm hugs, and sweet kisses.
  • My dad. Today is his birthday. I can really say that my dad loves me, wants the best for me, and does everything in his power to make sure that I am comfortable, healthy, and well taken care of. I can honestly say that my dad has played a huge part in my life from the very beginning. He made sure my school fees were paid, my clothes were paid, I never went hungry, I took vitamins, I went to the doctor when necessary, and I was never alone or without support. He made decisions that I did not like, but I was never tossed in the backseat. Even as an adult, he is almost always the first person I call when there is trouble or uncertainty. My parents aren’t even together, and I know that he is one of the first people my mother calls for help. And he always answers. Everyone can’t say that. I can. How awesome is that?!
  • Having enough. Not too much, or too little. I have enough.

Hope you’re feeling thankful today. If not, I encourage you to get in the spirit! If you’re reading this post, that means you can:

  • Read
  • Get internet access
  • Be thankful too

So get on it. Let me know what you’re thankful for today. 🙂

On another note, I’m on a hunt. I want a new writing device. I would use it exclusively for my novel (and possible short story) writing. I don’t want another laptop. Or a desktop (Blech!). I’ll settle for a netbook if I have too, but something like the Neo2 or Dana (overpriced, in my opinion) would be cool. They just seem like old models. No updates in a while. Do you know of any other products like them? I can’t seem to find anything else. Not knowing what exactly to search for is probably a part of the problem. “Neo2 competitor”? “Writing device”? “Writers favourite gadgets”? I really don’t know. Nothing is working. HELP! Please let me know of anything you have used, heard of, stumbled upon, or magically found by searching on my behalf 🙂 Many thanks for your efforts!

I’m Thankful

It’s Thursday. You know what that means!

Today, I’m thankful for:

  • Improved water consumption *taps self on back*
  • Wine Dinner this weekend!
  • Awesome bloggers sharing their stories, inspiring and encouraging others, kind comments, etc.
  • Good books to read. Currently reading Still Alice
  • Nice reminder I just got to review a book and post it here
  • Character Development – It is SO helpful. I spent an hour last night, getting to know the characters of the novel I’ll be writing (and re-writing) over the next few months, and the novel is really taking shape in my head. The plot has thickened, just from that exercise. And I’m not done yet! So exciting!
  • Lots to do. I THRIVE on this. I love being busy, and being able to change it (what I’m doing at any given time) up as needed
  • Running. I am seriously BACK. On Saturday morning, I went for a solo run. Clocked my best mile! WOO! Went out again on Tuesday evening. Did 1.5 miles, and almost ran the whole way. I am making progress, and building up endurance. This is GREAT. I feel SO GOOD about it. It helps that running is a sort of therapy for me.
  • Yoga on Saturday with my mum. It’s been recommended by her doctor. I hate yoga, really. Ok, so I’ve only taken one class. It sucked. Scarred me. But I’m gonna give it another shot, just for my mama.
  • Dad is going to the US in a few days. This means I can get stuff! I want a pair of running capris, tanks, a long sleeve top (that matches my Vibrams, hehehehe), and a hydration belt. I’m also gonna get him to mail a bunch of Christmas cards I wrote up from 2010. LOL. And some tea for friends. 🙂
  • Finding that positive, happy place… In ME.
  • My innate ability to turn things on and shut things off in seconds. You probably don’t understand this, and that’s okay. 🙂

Take some time, today, to be thankful. Look at all that’s around you, and all that’s INSIDE you. Embrace all that is good. And be thankful! Feel free to share what you’re thankful for in the comments.

Thankful Thursday

It’s Thursdaaaaay! We’re almost there, weekday workers. Sooo close.

I’m suuuper busy today. All week really, but today is just… Time is flying. I’m in fastforward. It’s going, going, going. BUT. I can’t be too busy to be thankful, so here we go!

I’m thankful for:

  • Water. I ignore it as it sits on my desk a lot of the time, but it’s still there for me, whenever I need it.
  • Music. It keeps me going. Whether I’m running, working, or sitting in traffic.
  • Job. It’s pretty fun and exciting. It throws some serious curveballs my way sometimes, but there’s not much I’d rather be doing.
  • Writing opportunity. A contest is closed, but I emailed the editor… They’ll take my submission (snail mail only) along with the fee once it’s postmarked by Feb. 1. Yeah, so I have to bang it out on the weekend. But WOO! YAY! for opportunities!
  • Writing calendar done. It took me a while, but I got all the competitions I’d recorded (that have this year’s dates posted) in my calendar. Now all I have to do is plan for pacing by setting dates for my first drafts to be done, then revision dates, re-reads, etc. WOO! I’m pumped!
  • Wine Dinner! WOO! It’s next weekend. The menu came out today, and I am puuuuumped! SO ready for that amazing meal.
  • My beautiful Babe. The water is always hot for my shower when I get home. I’m greeted by hugs and kisses upon arrival. Dinner is always ready soon after. We always have something to watch. Cuddle time is always in the plan/schedule. *sighs* I am one super fortunate lady.
  • Moments of thankfulness.
