Before I dive into the questions (and my answers), I wanna thank you all for you undying support, kind words, and virtual hugs, flowers, and ice cream treats. You’re all great at making a lil lady feel better on a really rough day. Thanks for that. Today is a much better day, and I’m looking forward to the weekend. I have to admit I’m a bit nervous about the art workshop we’re going to. Wish me luck! Hahaha.
1. What’s the last thing you spent too much money on?
Hmmm… Does it count when I bought a turtle and orchid for my office for $100? I didn’t really NEED them. I just WANTED them. And I really didn’t NEED to get the pretty pot, but I really WANTED it. The orchid was $25, the pot was $35, and the turtle was $40. They are all VERY nice, and I like them VERY much, even though Babe just said, “WHAT?! You spent WHAAAT on them?! You didn’t tell me that.” Oh, I didn’t, did I? Oops!
2. What celeb chef would you want to make you dinner?
GORDON RAMSEY, HANDS DOWN! The man does not mess around with food. He is SERIOUS about food. Just like me. He wouldn’t disappoint me.
3. Where do you hide things when visitors pop over or do you let them see the real deal?
Unless we had sex toys lying around, I don’t think there’d be much to hide… Ummm… I guess I’d hide things in the cupboard where the water heater is. No one would have any reason to go in there.
4. Who is your oldest living family member?
My great-grandmother. Ma. She’ll be 92 in a few weeks. And you wouldn’t know it to look at her, or see her all over the place, driving and ish.
5. What is your favorite DQ treat and/or Sonic drink combo (ie: cherry vanilla Dr. Pepper)?
BLIZZARRRRRDS! Historically, I go for the M&M Blizzard, but lately, I’ve been forcing kindly asking the staff to make a Blizzard of the Oreo Brownie Earthquake (which is really a sundae). They don’t refuse me. They usually ask around, and people get confused, and then they just make it. Hahahaha.
I haven’t done this in a while. I hope I remember how it works! Hahahaha.
1. What movie do you love to quote?
I don’t think I ever quote movies. I quote people in real life (like my parents, siblings, etc.), and songs. I have a flair for inserting song lyrics in every day conversations. Seriously. I am SO good at it.
You know what, I say, “Too infinity! And beyooooonnnnnd!” quite a bit. Generally, when I tell Babe, “I love you…” Ahahahaha. That’s from Toy Story. Buzz Lightgear or Lightyear or whatever.
2. Have you ever ridden a motorcycle?
Yep. I like motorcycles a lot. I’ve never been in control of/driven a motorcycle though. I think it would be super cool if a bunch of people went on an island tour with me, via scooters. We could all buddy up and rent scooters (two people per scooter) and scoot around. SCOOT, SCOOT! We’d stop off to cool places like the beach and fish fry (where they sell native food like – you guessed it – fried fish along with the best daquiris in the worrrrrld… And I’m confident in saying that, even though I haven’t travelled the entire globe YET), and the caves. It would be SO fun. And slightly less dangerous than riding on motorcycles.
3. What’s your favorite thing to do on a rainy day?
Curl up on a couch with the best snuggle buddy in the world, drinking hot chocolate/tea, eating cookies and other goodies, watching movies, and reading books.
4. Do you prefer a bunch of small gifts, or one really big, (expensive) gift?
I ask myself this question all the time. It’s even a tough call when it’s for someone else. Last year, I had the time of my life, filling stockings for my nieces. It was awesome. There were lots of goodies, and I knew they’d have a great time unwrapping and unpacking things from their stockings. I loved it. They loved it. It was great. It turned out to be kind of expensive. I could have very well bought them iPods for the money I spent. Would it have been as much fun (for either of us)? No. Not at all. This year, though, I’m settling on one cool item. Lots of pressure on me though. I only have ONE chance to score! GAAAAAH!
For myself, I like either one. A really nice gift is cool, but so are a bunch of little, thoughtful, me-worthy items. I think lots of small(er) gifts can be more fun. Especially if they’re all very ME, or connected. Like a cookbook, and a bakeware set, and an apron… Just an example. You get the drift.
No matter what, I like to have something I can treasure. Whether it’s a big gift that will last a long time, and I can keep, always think of the giver, awesome. If it’s one item of the 10 small gifts (that could be a charm for a bracelet, or a really good book), that’s cool too. I just like to know that thought went into the gift(s), the person related it directly to me, and it’s not just random selection and wrapping. That’s all. 🙂
5. Do you ever lose track of days and show up somewhere wrong?
Hahahahahaha. This has actually never happened to me. That’s funny though. Well, when it happens to other people. I wouldn’t like it much. A few times, in university, I showed up to the wrong class (due to confusion of locations, not knowing about room changes, or general disorientation). It’s great when you sit in a class, listen to the professor go on and one, and THEN they announce the class you’re in. THEN you’re all, “Huh?! Whaaaa?!” And you look around to see if anyone else looks confused or lost, as you hide your own lost-and-confused-ness. And you wonder if you should leave, and dash to the right class since it’s only been 15 minutes (that you’ve missed). But you realized you’ll look crazy if yon walk out after the announcement of the name/number of the class when you’ve been there for a whooole 15 minutes! GAAAAAH! What to do, what to do?!
Gotta do a two-in-one today. My internet connection yesterday (which is a wireless connection from TWO FLOORS DOWN was terrible. It was never up for more than 5 minutes. I figured I’d just save it for today before my thankfulness faded into annoyance. That wouldn’t have been good, right? Anyway, I’m hoping they come to hook up my phone line and internet today.
Ok, here we go! This week, I’m thankful for:
The good fortune I’ve had this week in getting to work on time. I decided on a time to leave the house to get the bus, and the maximum wait period for the second bus once I get downtown. It’s worked really well, and I haven’t been less than 10 minutes early on any day. YAY, me!
The pretty lady who gets up super early to make sure we both get breakfast, packed lunches and snacks, and out the door in time, and takes the walk (in the dark) to the bus stop with me, and takes the ride downtown (way earlier than she really needs to). How fortunate am I?!
New BlackBerry! YAY! It’s a work phone, so I don’t use it for personal calls (though this wasn’t stipulated), but it’s great for BBM, apps, internet access, etc.
A job that I like and I am happy to show up for from Monday to Friday.
Things to do that I actually care to do.
The training run done on Wednesday. Completely unexpected. A lady in the building who knows (and was sort of raised by) by great-grandmother gave me a ride, so I got home a LOT earlier than the other days, so it was early enough run with Babe.
Breakfast! Makes the day go so much better.
Cooler weather. I love sweaters and scarfs. It’s not time for them yet (not that it will get too much colder), but I’m excited about it. I also like the nice, cuddly sleep it encourages.
Time changing soon. It’ll be lighter in the evenings, so I could actually get back on track with running. 7pm, right now, is too dark.
Forever 21 order I placed. Babe and I will be getting some more work-appropriate clothes in a week or two. Yippeeeeee! Still need more, but we’re taking it step-by-step. A little bit this week, a little bit next week. By the end of the year, we should be good to go!
The massive improvement in my water consumption. My body is getting used to it, now that I’ve been paying special attention to it, and sort of drinking on a schedule. Now, I’m even getting thirsty. This never happened before because my body was just so used to being dehydrated. Crazy, I know. Now, I’m finishing about 28oz. per day.
The shower. A nice hot shower. Or the street. For a bike ride. If I need to cry, the shower wins. If I have pent up something-or-other to get out, bike ride. When I build up endurance, I think running may be a new escape for me. I’d like to be in a place where I can run off to a family island (less developed, less commercial island of The Bahamas) for a weekend to relax, unwind, be at one with the… Something. The beach.
2. What shows are you watching this fall?
None. We still don’t have cable, and I don’t see the need for it. We were going to get it, but I’m not so sure now. It’s not like we really watch tv. And it’s easy to download tv shows, or watch them online. (I’m not even sure we’re going to get the internet.) Life is just simple and peaceful right now. Less distractions and interruptions. Unnecessary ones. I like the way it is now.
3. What was the longest roadtrip you’ve ever taken and where did you go?
From Nova Scotia to New Brunswick, I think. I don’t remember how long it took. No, wait. I took a bus from Toronto to Niagra Falls. Maybe that was longer. I don’t know.
4. Do you plan on taking your kids to Disney World?
Definitely. I plan on taking MYSELF to Disney World as well. Babe and I will probably do a Disney World trip next year. (I only went once, on the 6th grade class trip.) I’ll have to remember to ask about it and see what her thoughts are. But seriously. Who doesn’t wanna go to Disney World?!
5. What is something people would surprised to know about you?
Hmmm… That my mind makes frequent trips to the gutter?

5. What was the last thing you ate? Apple slices with nutella and white grapes. Babe packed my snack. 🙂

7. How is the weather right now? NICE. Autumn is great here. We don’t get the pretty leaves or anything, but it FEELS good. A few weeks of not-so-summer weather for a change. It’s perfect weather for a nice walk.

9. The first thing you notice about the opposite sex people? Assuming we’re talking physical features:Eyes/Teeth. I have a seriously thing about teeth. I can’t deal with messed up teeth. Too spaced out, or fighting for room. No, no, no. Yellow? NOOO.
10. Favorite type of Food? STARCH! Rice, potatoes, pasta, bread. YUMMM.
11. Do you want children? Yes! Four or five.
12. Hair color? Black with some brown mixed in.
13. Do you wear contacts? No. I could never put those things in my eyes. Hahaha.

20. Favorite Movie? I really don’t know. I have a hard time recalling movies when I’m asked. I’ll go with The Pursuit of Happyness (yes, that’s the spelling) since it came time mind after I sat here for 3 minutes, staring and thinking.

25. Favorite animal? I really don’t like animals at all, actually. For pets, I’m okay with fish. I love aquariums. They’re cool. And minimal work. I think elephants are cool. And I have a thing for turtles. I don’t know why.

28. Have you ever loved someone? Yes.
29. Who would you like to see right now? My niece, Mia.

32. Do you like to travel by plane? I have no issues with it. Well, except for the ridiculous prices of the tickets sometimes.

36. Do you have a tattoo? No. I’m having one designed though. I’m pretty excited about it.

40. What is the wallpaper on your cellphone? My phone right now is a sort of in-between-phones or a phone-until-I-can-get-one-I-really-want. It’s just a basic Nokia that just makes and receives calls, and sends and receives text messages. Not much more than that. Hell. It may even have that ancient snake game on it. Hahaha. All that to say that there is no wallpaper, or option to have one.
41. Are you afraid of the dark? No.
42. Favorite hangout: Not many places I like to hang out around here. The ones that I like aren’t really comparable. I guess I like Fish Fry because it’s a strip of little shacks/restaurants, so a group could meet up there, and everyone can find something good to eat and drink, and just hang out.
43. 3 things you can’t live without? Fresh air, music, love.
44. Favorite songs? Again, I draw blanks when directly asked things like this. Dog Days Are Over (Florence + The Machine), Lose It (Austra), Say You Love Me (Naturally 7), Lover’s Rock (Sade), Pretty Baby (Vanessa Carlton), No One Else (TaDa).
45. What are you afraid of? Fear.
46. Are you a giver or a taker? Giver. I find it hard to take. Accepting gifts, compliments, and favours has always been difficult/weird for me. It’s something I’m working on.
47. What are your nicknames? Lovely, Lici, Lic (LEES). Most people call me “Alicia.”
48. What is your dad’s middle name? It is unspeakable. Un-type-able. Never to be shared. It’s that bad. He hates it that much.

59. What do you think about before you go to bed? I try not to think about anything. To just be calm, clear-minded, and relaxed.
So, every week I do this Five Question Friday blog hop thingy. This week, me no likey the questions. I can’t really explain why. I just don’t. I don’t feel like answering them. I DO feel like doing my regular Friday post though. You’re happy, right? I’m going to answer my own little questions. And guess what. If you want to ask more, go ahead. I’ll answer them.
I’m making these up as I go along, so don’t expect any sort of flow or sensibility, okay?
What’s your favourite tv show?
Oh, man. Tough one! I don’t know. I’m not that big on tv. Actually, Babe and I haven’t had cable since we moved. At one point, in university, I turned my cable off for over a year. It was just ridiculous that I was paying over $70/month to watch about 3 channels. Most of the time, the tv was just background noise. These days, the only things I would actually mentally schedule to watch on cable are Chopped (Food Network) and… Yeah, that’s it. Hahaha. I like a few other shows, but not enough to not do anything else when they’re on. I like Law & Order, Royal Pains, Brothers & Sisters… All of which I can watch online, so YAY! Tv addict? Not me. Now, when basketball season starts, I’m gonna need cable up in that apartment.
What are you currently reading?
The Little Women. I’ve been reading it on my lunch breaks, and on quiet evenings at home. Mostly at lunch time. This is probably my 3rd time reading it. My dad made sure I read what he considered to be “The Classics” when I was younger. I always loved reading, and he fed my need. I’m enjoying The Little Women as much as I did the first time I read it. I like when I reread a book, and it’s like the first time. Timing is everything. I’ll talk more about how much I like the book, my favourite characters, and my favourite parts in another post when I’m done. I was savouring it, but now Babe is ready to read Catching Fire, and I don’t want to be left behind, so I’ll be picking up the pace on the weekend.
What’s the last song you listened to?
I don’t remember the exact song. I was when I was running, and was by Austra. I looove Austra. The music is SO great. The vocalist reminds me a lot of Florence (Florence + The Machine). My favourite, right now, is Lose It. It’s very simple, very pretty, and very… raw? In a way. Listen to it.
What’s the last movie you watched?
The last movie I watched in its entirety? I don’t remember. Sad, since it was just two nights ago. It was something with this girl in it. Ummm… Yeah, I don’t know. Babe and I watched 90% of The Messenger last night. I didn’t really get sleepy, but my eyes couldn’t take it any more. I liked it. It’s pretty interesting, and the subject matter is something a lot of people probably never think about. I’m weird, so I have thought about it. We’ll watch the last few minutes of it tonight, before starting a new movie.
What do you like to get from the concession stand when you go to the movie theatre?
I’m a little piglet, really. I like to get:
A hotdog (all beef) with mustard, ketchup, relish, and very little mayo. If I can get some grated cheese on there, AWESOME!
Nachos WITH the jalapeño peppers. YESSS! We don’t have the option here, but when I was in Halifax, I used to get the cheese put on straight on my nacho chips, and salsa on the side. YUMMERS!

It’s FRIDAAAAAYYYY! As always, I’m doing Five Question Friday. You should do it too! The questions are posted weekly here.
1. Dream job…realistic and completely unrealistic.
Realistic: Wife, mom, and director of a youth organization. Provide a home, give support, teach life skills, give homework help, etc.
Unrealistic: An artist. (Unrealistic because I have ZERO artistic bones in my body. ZERO. But I sooo wish I could draw, paint, sculpt, dance, sing, etc.)
2. Do you fart in front of your significant other?
Nope. Not in front of anyone. I go to the bathroom for that. I know… Miss Priss. Except that I’m NOT.
3. What’s the furthest you’ve ever traveled from home? How far and where was it?
Halifax, Nova Scotia (from Nassau, Bahamas). It’s about 5 hours flying time, but takes from 1pm to 10pm (with a stop in Toronto) or from 8am to 10pm (with stops in Miami and New York).
4. How do you celebrate birthday for your kids? Family only or friends? … Alternate for those without kiddos: How did you celebrate birthdays as a kid?
I have a cousin who is 13 years older than me. She loved me to pieces, from I was born. She wanted to be a teacher, so I was her (very willing and able) student. She took me with her everywhere. She also planned my birthday parties. They were at Burger King (very near her house), and lots of fun. Clowns and everything!
5. Fave thing about fall?
I LOOOVE the colours. The changing leaves. The crunch of them under my feet. Leaf pile diving. Fall coats. (Unfortunately, none of these apply right now. There’s really no fall season in The Bahamas. Just varying degrees of summer.) The in-between sort of weather. The feeling of a new beginning (with new semesters starting). The smell and feel of the air.

Depends on what the column is about, really. I see myself going with the “conch salad” theme more than anything else, because then I could mix it all up. I can rant a little, talk about food, dole out my awesome advice… All in one column.
2. Who is your mentor/inspiration?
Ma. My great-grandmother. She’s pretty awesome. The woman is NINETY-ONE years old. NINE-TEEEE-ONE! She still does everything for herself. And a lot of things for the rest of us. She walks without assistance, can dash around the place, she drives, she cooks and cleans (and I mean really cleans)… Everything. Actually, up until early this year, she ran her own business. She decided to close after 51 years of dressing thousands of women. She had THE ladies’ boutique. And I’m not saying that because she’s my great-grandmother. That’s just what it is. Or was. THE place to shop for clothing for work, church, weddings, funerals, balls, proms, banquets… Yep. She’s an amazing lady.
I don’t really drink Coke first thing in the morning though. Not every day. So I deserve some credit. Right? Mhmm. Nod your little head. You know I do.
What I REALLY like in the morning is TEA. Do I ever make it? Nah. Not unless it’s a late, lazy morning like Sundays and Mondays tend to be. Other than that, I’m too busy sleeping too late and scrambling around to get ready to make tea.
4. Would you wear your mom’s clothes?
Some of them. She has decent taste in clothing. Our sizes are different, but we could get away with some of the same tops. Pants or skirts would never work. We also have the same shoe size. Although my feet are probably fatter, and hers are longer. It works though. Sometimes, she drops shoes off for me to wear around the house to stretch them for her. Hahaha.
5. When you were a kid, did you put posters on your wall? If so, what were they of?
Never had posters on my wall. Ever. The answer is sort of a long story. How short can I make it? Hmmm… I didn’t spend any time in my bedroom (which was at my dad’s) because I spent most of my wide-awake hours at my aunt’s house (when I wasn’t at school). From school, we went straight to Auntie’s. Our dad picked us up when he got off from work which was anywhere between 7:30 and 11:30pm. Posters on walls that I never spent time between (or looking at) really would have made no sense. If I did have posters, I have no idea what would have been on them. Maybe Spanish verb conjugations or something nerdy like that.
I missed Thankful Thursday. Here we go. I’m thankful for:
Good times with family
Babe taking those awful bus rides with me this week
Improvement in my water consumption
Babe agreeing to my decorating plan (I NEED to remember to post about it later)
The ability to work with a single burner hotplate (Oh, man. Y’all should really witness it.)
Success in the trip to get stuff for the new place. We now have a completed bathroom plus a front door mat and a kitchen garbage WITH a lid. WOO!

I don’t remember what my last ringtone was. My phone was always on vibrate. I don’t like hearing phones ring. I’m pretty sure the ringtone was a Bedouin Soundclash song. Probably this one:

2. What is your favorite memory from this summer?
Hmmm… Probably riding around with Babe and my little cousins – Drew and Ryan. They were HILARIOUS and lots of fun. We went for lunch, drove around roundabouts a lot of times, played music (rap, pop, and Bahamian), sang loudly in the car, went for ice cream… Good times.
3. Paper books or ebooks?
I’m onto ebooks right now. I simply don’t have the space for all of the books that I have read/read/will read. And it’s nice to have a little electronic device to carry around, and be able to take my pick of any books I loaded onto it. It’s better than lugging around lots of books (which I used to do). I appreciate paper books (aside from the killing of trees and all that green stuff), and believe that they still have their place. Book stores have already started closing, and that saddens me. One of my favourite things to do has always been to browse book stores, and end up leaving with far more books that I planned to purchase. Here, in The Bahamas, there aren’t many book stores at all, so I rarely book shop. In Canada, Chapters and Indigo were my heaven.
4. If you could have one home upgrade what would it be and why?
Right now, any room could use an upgrade. Our place is pretty bare bones since we just moved in about a week ago. If I could change something semi-structural, it would be the lighting. I don’t like the fixtures. I also wish we had ceilings fans (since we both prefer fans to air conditioning).
5. When was your first serious boyfriend/girlfriend?
The first “serious” boyfriend was when I was 17, and a few months out of high school. He was a really nice guy. Very ambitious, hard working, family-oriented. We were a good match. The trust issues, however, did not work for me. I was not having it. G’bye!

1. Shoes in the house – yay or nay?
Um. I’m kind of… Of two minds on this one? It depends on so much. I, generally, like to keep something on my feet. Shoes, slippers, footies, socks. Whatever. I usually wear my flippy floppies in the house. When I’m at someone else’s house, I ask what the preference is. Some people don’t want people wearing shoes in their house. I get it if they have white carpet or something like that. Some people, on the other hand, will insist that you keep them on. If it’s a party, my shoes are staying on. For sure. I can’t have my feet mingling with other feet. Even if it’s just by stepping where they’ve stepped. Ew! I’m weird about feet. and I have major issues with my feet feeling dirty. Sand, dirt… Any foreign particles. Hate it.
2. What do you call them- flip flops, slippers, thongs, etc?
Flip flops! Sometimes flippy floppies because I think it’s funny. And reminds me of “I’m On a Boat.”
3. What song are you almost embarrassed to admit you know all the lyrics to?
Hmmm… Tough one. *goes to lunch to think about this*

4. What is the best quality to have in a friend?
Dependability. Show up when he/she is supposed to, willing to answer the SOS call, one way at least 95% of the time (5% allowance for moodiness).

I hadn’t thought about it. Until RIGHT NOW. Since you asked…

It’s Five Question Friday! WOO! You’re excited. I know it.
1. Do you close the bathroom door when you are home alone?
No. I used to. Which is kind of funny. I think I used to close the door because I lived at my aunt’s which was kind of like Grand Central Station. Actually, my cousins’ friends used to call it “The Blocks.” It was always the place to hang out. People drop in all the time. And all of my aunt’s children, my great-grandmother, and my dad have keys to her house. Yeah. I closed the door. Now, living alone, it makes no sense. 2. You have to walk around with a word on your forehead. That word describes you. One word. What is it?
There aren’t many words that could stand alone in describing me. One word that works, and is my favourite, is ECLECTIC. I love it. It’s me. *sticks word on forehead*
3. What store do you refuse to shop at and why?
I refuse to shop, period. I intensely dislike it. I especially dislike it here because everything is super expensive. Everything is imported, mostly from the USA, so prices are more than doubled when they make it to the shelves. I avoid shopping altogether, and order online when I can. I HAVE to grocery shop though. I prefer Super Value and avoid City Market at pretty much all costs. The store is just too messy, poorly laid out, and the location close to me didn’t have a meat section for over a month. The refrigerators broke down or something, so no meat was on display. Customers would have to go to the back and ask the butcher for meat. There wasn’t even a sign to say this. The first few times, I just thought they were out of meat (for whatever absurd reason). That was the final straw for me.
4. If you participated in arranged marriages for your child(ren), who would you choose for your child(ren)?
I don’t have any children yet. (Pray for me. I want some. Or a lot.) I imagine that I’d pick the awesome children of awesome friends for my children. I’d tried to match their personalties, somehow. Find complements. People to balance them out. Thinking about it is kind of scary. I’m glad they’re going to have complete autonomy in that decision.
5. If you could pick how and when you would die, would you?
Oh, man. I don’t know… I don’t think so. It probably shouldn’t be that way. Knowing the exact moment. It would probably make life weird. Kind of like when you were 14 years old, trying to have a good time at a party, but paying attention to the time, knowing that curfew is coming up. Or worse, at 17, still having a curfew, having the car, and needing to maximize fun and time at the party, but needing to leave in enough time to get home before curfew. GAAAH! The pressuuurrre! No. Leave it. Let me be oblivious to my impending death. But wait… I definitely want it to be in my sleep. No violence, no pain.
