Five Things Friday: Secrets

Today, I give you…

  1. I am not interested in the olympic games in the least. I don’t even understand why they exist.
  2. I have no national pride. I do not care about the accomplishment of random people who happened to be born in the same country as I was and do not know personally. I will celebrate my brother MARCHING at an event (seriously), but I can’t find a penny to flick at a stranger’s gold medal for swimming faster than people from other countries.
  3. I hate when people hang up on me, cut off a conversation, or otherwise say their piece and then shut down in an attempt to stick it to me. When that happens, they don’t exist in my life (until they come crawling back). I don’t call. I don’t send messages. I don’t ask for favors. I make sure they have to contact me first. *shrugs* [Yes. This happened today. No, I’m not even mad. Just a little surprised.]
  4. I often get more annoyed than the person affected when unfairness/rudeness/disrespect strikes a loved one. I get PISSSSSSED when my BFF’s boyfriend does something stupid, and stay that way for longer than he/she does. AND I get annoyed when the wronged person does not see that they were wronged or ignore it. AND it’s even MORE annoying when it just isn’t my place to say anything, and I have to fume to myself. Lol.
  5. I’m not a slave to food, but I do have some poor habits. I drink a Coke when I have a headache (because it WORKS), and that’s probably okay. It’s like drinking ginger ale for a tummy ache, right? I also drink a Coke when I’m annoyed. Better than vodka, right? And sometimes, ice cream is the only answer to the question of a really long week.

Got any secrets you wanna share? Any list of five things?

Five Question Friday

1. Who mows your grass?
I’m not a homeowner yet. 😦 When I am, I will happily mow the lawn. I did it when I worked as a live-in for a youth program. Our house was awesome, and we had a sweet yard.
2. Do you have a picture wall or picture gallery in your house (show us! <— my addition to the question)?
No. I wish! I want one of those really cool frames with different sizes and origins of photos. I took a picture of a cool one some time ago, but it was on the phone that was stolen.
3. What book has influenced your thinking the most? Or, what blog? (I want to read what gets people thinking!)
Not sure. Maybe Eat Pray Love. Honestly, I think that answer is a cop-out. I don’t have much time to really think about this. Hmmm… Yeah, I don’t know.
4. Do you have allergies? If so, how do you handle it this time of year?
None. YAY, me! It must suck to have allergies.
5. What’s your go to meal to cook in an hurry?
I cook everything pretty slowly. Lol. I enjoy the process. Quick meals are Babe’s specialty. The quickest thing I make is probably spaghetti.

Five Question Friday

1. Do you have a go to song that always puts you in a good mood?
Hmmm… Not really. I just have a really good cry-it-out song. LOL. There are lots of songs that put me in a good mood though. I like feel-good songs. And I like silly, fun songs. But they have to make sense. I know, I know. Don’t tell me.
So here are a few songs that I really, really like:

– Firework – Katy Perry

– Ride With Me – Nelly (I’d forgotten about this song until it was played loudly by a neighbour. I think Babe and I were in bed reading. I stopped. To sing. WITH ACTIONS. Yes, it was great. Lol.

– I’m Every Woman – Whitney Houston (I sorta get this song. I sorta don’t. I’m ONE woman. But it IS all in me. Heee-eeeey!)

– I Believe in a Thing Called Love – The Darkness (I think the combo of the song title and the name of the group is hilarious.)

– A Milli – Lil Wayne (Don’t look at me like that. You know you love it. *turns it up*)

– Sexy Back – Justin Timberlake

– Stronger – Kanye West

– Maneater – Nelly Furtado

– Fly Away – Lenny Kravitz

Ok, ok. I’ll stop there. 🙂

2. Are you a real Christmas tree kinda person or do you go with a real fake one?
REAL. Fake is not an option at ALL. I’d rather not have a tree at all than to have one of those IMPOSTERS in my living space. REEEAL. Lemme SMELL the season. Lemme sweep up the 4,582,595 pine needles that will far over the course of the 2 weeks that the tree will be in my house. That’s fine.

3. What are you thankful for?
Today, I’m thankful for the ever-beautiful, ever-supportive LOML, computer skills (I seriously saved myself HOURS today), my new giant green mug, happiness, and time.
I missed this in m Thankful Thursday: I had a GREAT weekend with Babe. We went to an art workshop, and fancy wine dinner. I will seriously post about it later. Seriously.

4. Which fashion fad from the past do you wish you could wear today?
None. I wear whatever I want. I don’t care what the people say. (Are those lyrics from a song? I’m not sure.) I was telling Babe last night that I think should have been born in the 60s. I am definitely an 80s girl, and I should have been this age in that decade. Headbands, polkadots, bright colours, fun prints, Madonna… Yeah. That’s me. It should have been my life.

5. Do you wait until the “low fuel” light comes on before you fill up the gas tank?
No. I’m paranoid (not really) about running out of gas. I hate the idea of having to call my dad saying, “Help. I ran out of gas.” More than that, I hate the imagined response from him. I never want to deal with that. Whenever I have a car for an extended period of time, I keep the tank at half. Anything under that makes me a bit nervous.

How about you? What are your answers? Join the fun at Five Crooked Halos! You can answer in the comments if you want. If you answer on your own blog, link back so I know and can read it. 🙂

Thankful + Five Questions

Five Question Friday!

1. If you had a weekly newspaper column, what would you name it?

Rants and Ramblings

Conch Salad

Everyday Living

Foodie Kitchen

Depends on what the column is about, really. I see myself going with the “conch salad” theme more than anything else, because then I could mix it all up. I can rant a little, talk about food, dole out my awesome advice… All in one column.

2. Who is your mentor/inspiration?

Ma. My great-grandmother. She’s pretty awesome. The woman is NINETY-ONE years old. NINE-TEEEE-ONE! She still does everything for herself. And a lot of things for the rest of us. She walks without assistance, can dash around the place, she drives, she cooks and cleans (and I mean really cleans)… Everything. Actually, up until early this year, she ran her own business. She decided to close after 51 years of dressing thousands of women. She had THE ladies’ boutique. And I’m not saying that because she’s my great-grandmother. That’s just what it is. Or was. THE place to shop for clothing for work, church, weddings, funerals, balls, proms, banquets… Yep. She’s an amazing lady.

3. What is your wake up beverage of choice?

Trick question?! COCA-COLA! That’s my #1 choice. Annnd start judgiiiiing… NOW!

I don’t really drink Coke first thing in the morning though. Not every day. So I deserve some credit. Right? Mhmm. Nod your little head. You know I do.

What I REALLY like in the morning is TEA. Do I ever make it? Nah. Not unless it’s a late, lazy morning like Sundays and Mondays tend to be. Other than that, I’m too busy sleeping too late and scrambling around to get ready to make tea.

4. Would you wear your mom’s clothes?

Some of them. She has decent taste in clothing. Our sizes are different, but we could get away with some of the same tops. Pants or skirts would never work. We also have the same shoe size. Although my feet are probably fatter, and hers are longer. It works though. Sometimes, she drops shoes off for me to wear around the house to stretch them for her. Hahaha.

5. When you were a kid, did you put posters on your wall? If so, what were they of?

Never had posters on my wall. Ever. The answer is sort of a long story. How short can I make it? Hmmm… I didn’t spend any time in my bedroom (which was at my dad’s) because I spent most of my wide-awake hours at my aunt’s house (when I wasn’t at school). From school, we went straight to Auntie’s. Our dad picked us up when he got off from work which was anywhere between 7:30 and 11:30pm. Posters on walls that I never spent time between (or looking at) really would have made no sense. If I did have posters, I have no idea what would have been on them. Maybe Spanish verb conjugations or something nerdy like that.

I missed Thankful Thursday. Here we go. I’m thankful for:

  • Good times with family
  • Babe taking those awful bus rides with me this week
  • Improvement in my water consumption
  • Babe agreeing to my decorating plan (I NEED to remember to post about it later)
  • The ability to work with a single burner hotplate (Oh, man. Y’all should really witness it.)
  • Success in the trip to get stuff for the new place. We now have a completed bathroom plus a front door mat and a kitchen garbage WITH a lid. WOO!

I’m On a Boat!

Not really. But it’s Five Question Friday. HOLLAAAAA!
1. Shoes in the house – yay or nay?
Um. I’m kind of… Of two minds on this one? It depends on so much. I, generally, like to keep something on my feet. Shoes, slippers, footies, socks. Whatever. I usually wear my flippy floppies in the house. When I’m at someone else’s house, I ask what the preference is. Some people don’t want people wearing shoes in their house. I get it if they have white carpet or something like that. Some people, on the other hand, will insist that you keep them on. If it’s a party, my shoes are staying on. For sure. I can’t have my feet mingling with other feet. Even if it’s just by stepping where they’ve stepped. Ew! I’m weird about feet. and I have major issues with my feet feeling dirty. Sand, dirt… Any foreign particles. Hate it.

2. What do you call them- flip flops, slippers, thongs, etc?
Flip flops! Sometimes flippy floppies because I think it’s funny. And reminds me of “I’m On a Boat.”

3. What song are you almost embarrassed to admit you know all the lyrics to?
Hmmm… Tough one. *goes to lunch to think about this*
She had dumps like a truck, truck, truck
Thighs like what, what, what
Baby, move your butt, butt, butt
4. What is the best quality to have in a friend?
Dependability. Show up when he/she is supposed to, willing to answer the SOS call, one way at least 95% of the time (5% allowance for moodiness).

5. Do you know what you want for Christmas?
I hadn’t thought about it. Until RIGHT NOW. Since you asked…
  • New Nook (I’m having a hard time choosing between the Nook Colour and the Nook Simple Touch. Both, please?
  • Nikon CoolPix LIME GREEN digital camera w/ built-in projector
  • Handmade straw basket for my bicycle (to match my custom-made Nook cover)
  • Bakeware (muffin pans, cake pans, cookie sheets)
  • Hand mixer (Not to mix hands. To mix food items. It’s just handheld. And maybe that’s what it should be called. Handheld mixer.
  • Electric can opener (Tired of those crappy manual ones)
  • New BlackBerry! I’d like the Bold. Not the touch version. I don’t like touch screens on phones.
  • B&N gift cards (to buy NookBooks!)
  • Earrings
  • Pandora charms (the 4 more that I need to fill out my bracelet)
  • Running shoes (Mine are kind of… Tired. I really want Nike IDs, and will probably design and buy them for myself.)
  • Aquarium! (I’ll pick out and buy my own fish, but someone should definitely spring for the tank, heater, filters… Yeah.)

Friday Favourites

A few of my favourite things:

(Warning: This list is food-heavy)

Fruit on the go: Gala Apples. But they have to be cut up. I have issues with eating around bones/seeds.

Fruit at home: Mangooooo! I like it peeled and cut up into bite sized pieces.

Salad at home: The ones Babe makes. Lettuce, tomato, cucumber, peppers, and whatever fruit we have with a mix of dressings.

Salad at a restaurant: GREEK, but only if they do it right. If not, I go for the Caesar. And I like my caesar salad TOSSED. Lol. Because I’m the princess, they do it that way for me at my godfather and dad’s restaurant.

Weather: When I’m out, I like the sun shining, and pleasant breeze, no humidity. At home, I like it cool, and some rain doesn’t hurt the night either. (This is when I’m in the Bahamas.)

Season: In Bahamas, Winter. It’s not a real winter, but it’s the only time the weather is nice, to me. Unless I’m able to beach. Then I’m okay with Spring. Summer is just too hot. Not pleasant at all, for me. In Canada, Autumn. Sooo beautiful. And the weather is a nice in-between little sandwich.

Things to do at home: When Babe is there, cook and eat together, watch a movie or tv show, cuddle, and go to sleep. When Babe isn’t there, clean like mad, catch up on things that require use of the computer, call Babe and fall asleep on the phone.

Drink with lunch: Coke. Except when it’s Sunday, and we’re having lunch at Ma’s. Then I want her iced tea.

TV Show: Chopped (Food Network)

Channel: Food Network. USA and TNT come close. I like Law & Order, NCIS, etc.

Food: I like food too much to really say what my absolute favourite food item is. I can say, thought, that I looove STARCH. Pasta, potatoes, rice, bread. That’s the stuff right there!

Vegetable: Broccoli and asparagus

Canned meat: Close one, between tuna and corned beef, but I’m going to have to go with tuna. I use corned beef for one particular dish (which Babe and I LOOOVE), but we use tuna for a few different things. I’ll post the recipe for the corned beef dish soon, in case anyone wants to give it a try.

Night-time beverage: Tea. I’m very particular. I like Lipton (Yellow Label) with 2 3/4 sugar and cream (never creamer or milk) to make it about my complexion. Mmm!

Night-time snack: Popcorn and chocolate ice cream. Together. This is something Babe got me into. Salty and sweet.

Day-time snack: Apples, Kirkland Fruit & Nut mix, Welch’s Fruit Snacks.

Dairy product: Though I haven’t bought any for a while, probably yogurt. Yoplait.

Breakfast: Grits and tuna, or veggie + mushroom omelette with turkey bacon and grilled cheese sandwich.

Hair Product Line: Paul Mitchell

It’s Five Question Friday time, folks. WOO! I’m super pumped. One of the questions I sent was chosen. WEEEEEE! Funny part? I have no idea what my answer is going to be. We’ll see how this goes. Ready? Ok.

1. Do you have siblings and are you close with them?
I do! I have two brothers and two sisters. I only grew up with my younger brother. We’re super close. We went through a horrible hate stage which lasted about 12 years. Finally, when he was in 7th grade, and I was in 12th grade, we were okay. We started looking out for each other, defending each other, etc. When I left for university, it was hardest to say bye to him (aside from my great-grandmother). EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. I left, I said bye to him last. And fought tears. Crazy, right? We’d talk on MSN Messenger (Holy cheese! Do people still use that?!) and MagicJack phones a LOT.
The older siblings are all at least 9 years older than me. That’s a bit of a gap, but we’re still close. We talk often, and go out together. They have children, and I looove their children. I’m a doting aunt. *Sighs* My sisters are super dependable. Stranded somewhere? Call a sister. Low on cash? Call a sister. Need someone to listen to me cry? Call a sister. Mum pissed me off? Call a sister. Need someone beat up? Call a sister. Hungry? Call a sister. Wanna go to the beach? Call a sister. Pregnancy scare? Call a sister. Need a new liver? Call a sister. Pretty much anything I need, I can call one of them. And they WILL come. Right away. My brother is the first born. He’s pretty hilarious. He’s pretty hood and gangsta and all that jazz. Well, externally. Really, he’s probably never “busted a shot” or anything like that. He’s no criminal. He just had lots of tattoos. LOTS. I stopped counting at 19. That was before I went to university. He hasn’t stopped yet. He’s a little less present, but super cool. Lots of fun. Very funny. We text message every now and then to catch up, but we mostly comment on each others’ Facebook statuses. Lol. Oh, the 21st century…

2. Would you rather be slightly UNDER weight or slightly OVER weight?
Oh, boy. I’d really dislike being either of those things. Shocking, I know! Looking at myself now, at a healthy weight, I’m pretty sure that even slightly underweight would look gross. I have a slight tendency to look a little anorexic at times. My collarbone is the protruding kind. Mind you, my legs and hips would assure ANYone that I never miss a meal. My upper body? No. My stomach is relatively flat, I have B-cups, my arms are average… Thinking about this more, I think it depends on where the weight would go (or come from). If the weight will leave my bottom half, I’d go with slightly underweight. If the weight is being added to my upper half, I’d go with slightly overweight (but I don’t want a belly!). GAH! This is tough. I’d look sick underweight. I’d go with overweight. No one would know that I’m not in the early stages of pregnancy, or on steroids for some kind of condition. AND I could work it off faster than I could gain it back. Yeah. Like my eggs. Slightly over, please.

3. What’s your favorite State Fair food to splurge on?
I’ve never lived in a state. I’ve never been to a State Fair. I’ve never had State Fair food. Now I haz a sad. 😦 I don’t even know what they have at those things. Hot dogs? I’m not crazy about scrap meat. Hmmm… Pizza? I find that the carnival (the thing that comes every year with lots of rides and gambling games) has the best pizza. Super cheesy. YUMMM! Maybe a State Fair could rival that. What else? Hmmm… Nachos, maybe? Gotta be LOADED though. At least two types of cheese, salsa, guacamole, sour cream, olives, jalapeños, and colourful peppers (green, yellow, red). YESSSSS! *clasps hands together and looks to heaven* Let it be, let it BE! Wait. Splurge? Would that be a splurge? I don’t know. That’s what I’d have though.

4. What are your thoughts on your kid(s) going to school in a few weeks?
I don’t have children, so I don’t have any sentimental or stressed-out-mom reason behind this. I’m glad school is reopening because one of my nieces has been idle all summer. It’s annoying to me. She doesn’t bother me at all, mind you. I just think it’s ridiculous for a 12 year old to be at home all day, every day, on the computer. Ridiculous. Too young to work like my other sister’s two children, and two old for daycare like my brother’s daughter, but I don’t understand why she’s not in some sort of camp. Or piano. Swimming. SOMEthing. Getting ENRICHED. BLAH!
On the other hand, traffic will get crazier. There’ll be more line-ups, and it may be a little more challenging, or taking a little more time, for me to zip out of corners on my bicycle. When schools closed for the summer, I saw a drastic change in traffic, and I’ve been able to ride with less anxiety. Oh, well. I’ll start leaving home 5-10 minutes earlier when school starts again, to make sure I get to work on time. It’ll be fine.
School reopening? YAY!

5. Pool or Ocean?
Depends on what I’m doing. I opt for the beach a lot because, hell, I live in the freaking Bahamas. The beach is never more than 10 minutes away. It’s so natural and beautiful. Island breeze, trees (that are not always palm), and the oceannnnn. The look, the smell… The calmmmmm. Ahhhh! I LOVE it. The only thing about the ocean is that it’s HUGE. It only makes sense to swim length-ways to be sure that you won’t get to tired to make it back to shore. I tend to just relax in the ocean. I don’t swim much. Just relax. And float. And TAN! Oh, and the ocean is really good for your health. Clears sinuses, helps with getting over colds, etc.
Now pools… Pretty artificial. Preferred for swimming? Yes. Chlorine and other chemicals aren’t the greatest thing ever, but they makes water in a hole a lot prettier. And stuff. People do bad things in pools, and that concerns me. When I grow up, and have a house, I’m gonna have a pool. At least then, the only urine in my pool will be from the bodies of my wonderful children who may choose to be lazy, sneaky, and disobedient at times. *Shrugs*
I haven’t done any days of truth in a looong time. Sorreh! I’m gonna get back on it soon. I usually spend my weekends internetless (yes, I made up that word), and do most of my posts from work (where I usually have very little work), but these days, it’s just been coming at me from every direction! Man, oh, man. Really though. I’m gonna get back on it. 🙂 Tonight, I’ll be at home by my lonesome, so I should be able to bang out some stuuuff.
