Five Things Friday

Here are a five things from my week:

  1. I suffered an injury at flag football practice. Seriously. The season hasn’t even started yet. Whyyy? I got a hard ball coming at me, tried to catch it, but failed because it was a bit too high. It hit my pinky finger. After that, I couldn’t really hold the ball properly to throw, or catch. Sucked. That was yesterday. It still hurts. It also looks kind of weird. Swollen, and red in the knuckle area, on both sides. I have to be extra careful when I rest my hand down, or do anything with it, really. I have a really high tolerance for pain, so when I feel a 3 or 4, I wonder if it’s really an 11, and something is seriously wrong. I’ll ice it more tonight and see what it looks and feels like tomorrow. If it’s still weird, I’ll make my way to the doctor to check it out.
  2. Babe packed my lunch and snacks today. She also did it earlier this week. How lucky am I? Answer: Extremely.
  3. Got a little planner for 2013. Yay! I was telling Babe how I wish I had one so I could record deadlines for the upcoming year, especially with competitions that are early in the year. Of course, when she was out yesterday, she picked one up for me. Awesommme!
  4. Wedding plans are up and down. Got word from the photographer we really wanted to do our photos. It’s $750 just for the digital images. That doesn’t include fee for creative time. NOT in the budget. We just want on-location photos of us – not even for the ceremony, just before – taken, and to get the digital images, and only 10-20 of them edited. How hard is that?! Gaaah! We need to find a community college student who can do a kickass job. We’re still good on the save-the-dates, invites, and guestbook. Woohoo! Got the contract for the music. Just need to sign it and send it back. Yay! I’ve been doing more pinning lately too, and coming up with cool ideas that are very US.
  5. I need to get back to my runniiiiiiing! Really. Seriously. I do. Babe and I talked about it, and agreed that we both feel like sacks of something-not-so-good when we don’t get some activity in. We’re going to make the extra effort to get out and do things. Even if it’s early in the morning, right Babe? Once I get home from work, I want to do ZERO. Aside from showering and having dinner. And watching movies/tv shows. Lol.

5 Frustrations

Today, I complain. I just have to, ok?
  1. Mother has been back and forth to a neurosurgeon in Florida. There have been lots of tests, and lots of money has been spent. This morning she got a call from the doctor who has been reviewing all of her scans from 2002. It is now known that she does NOT has MS. Well then why does she have problems with her legs? Why was she unable to walk for weeks? Why has she be paying thousands of dollars per month for Avonex? What does she ACTUALLY have? No idea. That’s what. Absolutely no idea what the hell is wrong with her. Did I mention that the local neurologist she sees is a total dumbass? Yeah. I kinda have it in for the moron.
  2. I have not yet found a job. This sucks. I need a steady income. I can survive, money-wise, but not forever. I’m really not enjoying my time at home. This is largely due to the fact that I do not have a proper workspace (where I could be getting writing done), the internet is up and down all the time (I lose replies to posts and emails a LOT), and Babe and I have to share a computer. I have a hard time with it because it always feels like what I want/need to do is less important or significant than whatever she is doing. There are a lot of things I need to do right now that probably appear to be frivolous, but are not. It’s extremely important that I build my author platform, do as much research as possible, and stay connected to the indie writing community. I don’t want to constantly ask to use the computer, but I don’t want to sit idly either. I am failing to strike the balance. And no, having a schedule does not work. Note: This is not an attack on Babe. The situation is not her fault.
  3. I’m writing children’s stories. They need illustrations. It’s a fail. I have yet to find an illustrator for this project. I need someone who will stick with it at least until the end of the year. I’m doing a series, so the illustrations have to be consistent. The characters, the scenery, the overall style… I want to bang out 6 stories/books by the end of the year. It’s not looking good. Artists in this country are some combination of flaky, unprofessional, expensive, too laid back, poor communicators, and overly opinionated. I just want someone to meet my requirements (which include professionalism and ability to meet deadlines), complete the project on time, and not kill me with the price. Apparently, this is too much to ask. I’ve started looking elsewhere. I’m hoping to find a student or recent grad who will take this on. Blaaaaah!
  4. I have not been working out. At all. It’s one of my ROW80 goals to run 4 times per week, and it is NOT happening. It sucks. Not only because I am not meeting a goal, but because it makes me feel like crap. I tend to be more lethargic and listless when I don’t get enough physical activity. I need to fix this. I did some yoga this evening. That’s a start, right?
  5. FROGS. I freaking HATE the nasty little pieces of crap. With the rain we’ve been getting recently, they are showing up more. I had three scares in 24 hours. I don’t know what to do. And no, I will not get over my irrational fear of them. They are GROSS. DISGUSTING. 
In the midst of all this, I have managed to get some writing done. Unfortunately, it is all over the place. I have six files going on my Neo2. Yep. That’s six different pieces. One is a flash fiction which I think is quite interesting. I’m excited about transferring it to the computer to edit, edit, edit. I’ll be submitting it for a competition this month. The other files are all the beginnings of short stories. I really have no idea where four of them are going. I just kind of started them all on whims. The fifth one, I have a better handle on. I can see where it’s going. Is it weird that I plan, plan, plan my novels, but I pants my short stories? Maybe. But my
process is my process, right?

Weekend Recap

Happy Mondaaaaayyyyy! My day/week got off to a great start, and it’s probably largely due to a fantastic weekend. I’m gonna rewind a bit, and fill you in on it.

SATURDAY

  • Morning run. I toootally drove in the direction of work instead of going to my new run spot. Lol. It was fine though, because there’s a really nice strip of beach out that way, and a sidewalk to run on. I just parked on the side of the road and ran there. It was sooo nice. The ocean, the minimal traffic, the breeze, the quiet of the morning… It was just great. I usually do 15-20 minutes of 3:1 (run:walk). For some reason, I just kept going. I RAN THE WHOLE THING! 15 minutes! I couldn’t get a decent picture of the stats, but here they are: Duration – 15;04″; Pace: 9’03” min/mi; Distance: 1.67 mi; Calories: 179. After the workout, the voice of Tiger Woods congratulated me on clocking my FASTEST MILE! 9’08”! I guess running the whole way instead of run-walking would obviously result in a faster mile, but hey… It was nice to hear and see it. So this working out and training has been paying off. Imagine if I actually managed to stick the plan and run when I want to! (I should be able to now, with transportation sorted out.) I seriously ran the whole thing. I know that’s like nothing for a lot of people, but huuuge for me. I wonder how long it’ll be before I can do 30 minutes non-stop. I’m not in a big rush though. Enjoying the journey, appreciating the process.
  • Morning yoga. Yeah. Right after my run, it was time to head over to yoga class. My mother was diagnosed with MS over a year ago, and her doctor recommended yoga. She really needs to do all she can to stretch, strengthen, and relax her muscles. Yoga it is. *sighs* I was NOT excited about this class. All I ever thought was, uuuugh, yoga is so dummmb. What’s the point of all that stretching and breathing and crap. Dummmb. Waste of time. And energy. BLAAAH! It didn’t help when I took a “beginner” class at the gym on my university’s campus and HATED it. It was crazy. I was like, “Lady, are you SERIOUS?! How am I gonna get my leg there?!” I just laid on my mat and went to sleep until it was over. Well! Imagine my surprise when I actually ENJOYED the yoga class on Saturday! I actually FELT things. Parts of my body WOKE UP. It was amazing. Mind you, I still wasn’t down for all the breathing stuff. I got bored once or twice. I actually like to meditate (for short times), but I think the runner’s high had something to do with it. I felt like I could bounce from wall to wall, and possibly fly. It was a big switch. Anyway, I liked it. I found that I was able to do quite a bit more than I thought I could. It was challenging, but you can bet your fanny that I answered the call! I’ll be back on Saturday with my mom. Again, it will be after my run. Maybe I’ll have a walk after the run to bring myself down a little? I don’t know.
  • Breakfast. I really don’t believe in buying breakfast. It seems so silly. It’s so easy and cheap to make eggs and turkey bacon at home, or whip up some oatmeal. Why pay for breakfast?! Well, I’ve taken to really treating myself on Saturdays. I buy a big breakfast for myself (stew conch – like a conch soup? – with a big piece of johnny cake – a cross between cake and bread). I’ll have to take a picture of it next time. I also get breaky for Babe and for my mum. It’s always sooo good, right after a shower, and right before lounging on the couch with my nook.
  • Quick dash out with Babe. The phone company was set up in a shopping centre parking lot giving away modems and waiving installation fees for the internet. Well, we don’t have a phone, so we didn’t qualify. Oh, well. While we were there, we went grocery shopping. Note that every time I use “we” in this particular point, I actually mean Babe. I just drove. And sat in the car and waited. I was WORKED OUT. AND really full. Hahaha.
  • WIIIIINE DINNNNNEEEEERRRRR! Sooo good. Our friends Vanessa, Ashley, and Rea joined us. It was a good time. Good food, good wine, great company. Everyone enjoyed the meal and the company. I’ll post the menu tomorrow. (This post is already really long.) And maybe some pictures, if WP wants to be nice to me.

SUNDAY

  • Chiiiiillllllllll. Babe made breakfast. Pancakes, eggs, and turkey baconnnnn! WOO! Loved it.
  • We pretty much stayed in bed, reading our nooks and chatting.
  • Laundryyyyy. I usually have FamJam but my great-gram went away, so I met my brother at her house to do laundry.
  • Dinneeerrr. I’ve been meaning to cook a nice meal for Babe for a while. I bought all the stuff for it last week, but didn’t get around to doing it. Well, last night, I did! We had chicken parmesan on spaghetti. I’ve definitely done better, but it was okay. Babe seemed to like it.

LESSONS LEARNED

  • The body is amazing.
  • I can do anything I want, as long as I don’t just want, but put in the effort.
  • Don’t knock it ’til you’ve tried it. Twice.
  • Routines are nice. So are treats.
  • Give. Take. Give some more.
  • Wine makes everyone happy.
