A Birthday and a Million Projects

Sunday was Babe’s birthday. We celebrated in minimalist fashion, I’d like to call it. Lol.

Last week Monday was my niece’s birthday and my sister made fried chicken wings and macaroni. It was pretty awesome, and Terneille kinda raved about it. When I told my sister her birthday was coming up, she immediately went into planning mode. “I’ll make her a pan of macaroni and fry some chicken wings! What time you want it?” YAY, for awesome sisters! That made it a lot easier for me.

cakecropBabe requested a carrot cake. Last year was cheesecake. This set my wheels turning, and I wondered if I could pull something kind of experimental off. I measured, poured, and mixed with confidence. It was only after I put the bundt pan in the oven that I started wondering if I was crazy, and imagining the horrible ways it could all go wrong. But it worked! WAAAHOOOOOO! Carrot cake and cheesecake in one, y’all! I know, I know. I’m a little out there. Whatevs. It worked and it was pretty tasty. Babe really loved it and my sister even called to tell me that she “NEEEEDS” me to make one for her. Hahaha.

Since I’m currently unemployed and don’t even have pennies to count, I made it rain on Babe in a different way. COUPONNNNNS! Let’s just hope she remembers to cash ’em all in. They’re pretty valuable, lemme tell ya!

So aside from birthday stuff, here’s what’s up:

  • I’m venturing into the world of zines. I’ll be making some of my own. Four, to be exact. I’m excited about it! I plan to complete the first issues of each one this weekend. Then I’ll start selling them on Etsy next week. Look out for linksies!
  • I finished The Whispering Willow! Did I mention this already? Even if I did, once is not enough. I FINISHED IT. The writing, that is. There is lots of editing to be done. But the first draft? FINITO!
  • I started writing a new novel. It’s not as fun to write as I thought it would be, and that’s probably because I didn’t plan it ALL out before I started writing. I work much better with a plan. A pretty precise plan. NOTED.
  • I need to workout. My body is all achy and sedentary and I’m super lazy right now. I hope to start this weekend. A little bounce on the trampoline. A 20 minute run. 15 minutes of yoga. I’ve gotta get this body in MOTION. STAT.
  • Currently reading The Distant Hours by Kate Morton. It’s a bit slower than her other two novels which I completely devoured. It’s taking me a bit longer to get through it due to pacing plus my zillion plus one projects I have going on. But it’s good. I’m enjoying it. Morton knows how to spin a tale. That’s for sure.
  • New 100 word story is up. Read it, comment on it, share it! đŸ™‚

What about you? What’s up? Working on any projects?

Oh, January!

Heyaaaaa!

Happy End of the Holidays!

My gosh, they took forever to go away, didn’t they? I’m not against the holidays, really. I like a day off from work as much as anyone else. I have a LOT to do with days off. Things just seem to go crazy around that time of year. There’s always certain sense of relief when it’s over and done with.

I am in some serious limbo right now, folks. The job I was hoping for is not coming through quickly enough. They haven’t even started interviewing yet. Meanwhile, I’m working part-time and my brain feels like it’s deteriorating. I’m not feeling challenged at all, but that’s no big surprise.

I guess this is a good time to dive into my writing. In December, I did quite a bit of work on my short stories. I wrote two or three new pieces, jotted down some ideas for new ones, and did a bit of editing. It was a pretty productive month for Alicia, the writer. January, on the other had, has been dead. Well. I’VE been dead. It’s almost mid-month, and I have nothing to show for it. Except for four or five submissions I need to make by the end of the month. Perhaps I should start working on ’em now? Maybe? Hahaha.

So far, I’ve made one submission this month, and I doubt it will be accepted. It’s a short story in list form for a compilation of list-form stories. Crazy, right? But since I think it won’t cut it, I’m going to rewrite it traditionally. I think it could really be a great piece with some work. That’s my first project, and I plan to complete it by Sunday. Then, I have three new stories to write for the end of month submissions.

I’m going to be in GO, GO, GO! mode for a while. I haven’t even told you about my new venture, but I will soon! That’s enough unloading for one post. đŸ™‚

My next post will be lighter. I’ll show you my Christmas prezzies. đŸ˜€

What are you up to these days? How’s January lookin’?

Excitement and Entertainment

Hey, y’all. Just a quick post to prove that I’m alive. Haha. Two things today. First, I’ll tell you about the exciting things I’m up to. Then, I’ll tell you what tv shows Babe and I are enjoying these days.
Exciting things:

  • NaNoWriMo! I’m ML for The Bahamas – Super tiny region. Hoping to increase the number of participants. Beyond that, I’m really excited that Babe will doing it, and as a REBEL! She’s writing a musical. Also excited that our good friend Ashley is joining the fun. If nothing else, the three of us will get to hang out (in person AND on twitter), and bang out 50,000 words of AWESOME. Join us? If you want in, let me know! Join our region! (You can join more than one, but can only “home” to one.) We can have online word wars and such. You know you wanna!
  • WEBSITE! I’ve been talking about this forever. “I need a website.” “I need to start building my author platform.” “I need a professional social media identity.” “Hmmm… I should have a website.” You know what. Hush all the noise. The domain name has been purchased! I have a website! It’s not live yet as I am still tinkering with things. By this time next week, it should be up and ready for your viewing. Yay!
  • Writing projects. I have about 10 things I need to do, writerly. I have two shorts to do final edits on, one flash to complete+post for critique+edit, two one-act plays to write, one 10-minute play to write, and two short stories to write. AND I need to set my story milestones for the NaNoWriMo novel. All this in FOURTEEN DAYS. On TOP of 2 weekly blog posts on the NaNoWriMo blog. Oh, the insanity! I love being busy though, I’m not gonna lie!
  • Flag Football. I seriously considered quitting. Seriously. I’m not big on quitting, but I’m not big on looking like an idiot either. I wasn’t feeling very good about my abilities. Well, I’ve figured out that it’s not really me. It’s the crappy lighting we’ve been practicing in. I do MUCH better in the light. And our games will be in the afternoon, so YAY. Mind you, I may still quit. We’ll see. The coach kinda pisses me off, and I think we may have to curse it out once or twice before the season even starts. Also, I don’t like being the worst person on the team, OR warming the bench. I’m not one to make up numbers. If I’m on the team, I’m gonna PLAY. If not, I’d rather read a book at home. Real talk, y’all.

Ok, enough of that excitingness. My heart is beating super fast and I’m getting drunk on adrenaline or something. On to the tv shows…

  • We LOVE Downton Abbey. It’s started again! YAY!
  • Homeland. It’s started again too. It’s really quite interesting.
  • We just started watching Switched at Birth. I really like it. It’s awesome that there’s a tv show with half its story line being about people who are deaf while not highlighting it, or making it seem like the worst thing in the world. It’s a pretty awesome tv show, and I really like the range of characters. Gotta say I really like Bay and, right about now, I’m finding Daphnee reeeally annoying. I’m glad Bay and Emmett are together. They’re cute.
  • Misfits. It must be starting soon! I’ve seen people tweeting about it, and posting about it on Facebook. YAAAYYY! We were super addicted to it, and watched the first season in about 4 nights.
  • Person of Interest. Holy craziness! This show is fun.
  • Scandal. We watched the first episode of the current season and then forget about it. Gonna have to look it up.
  • White Collar. I just like Neal. I really do. He’s just so cool, all around. Haha.
  • Criminal Minds. I think we’re watching season 6. I want to hurry up and get into season 7, but I don’t think it will make sense until Babe sees what happens in season 6. Sooo we’re watching season 6. We don’t watch it much because she thinks it gets a bit gory. I admit that it does, but it doesn’t bother me as much as it bothers her. We definitely can’t watch it while having dinner.
  • Modern Family. YEP! Still lovin’ it!

Our tv show interests are quite broad. We watch a lot of different things. I recently watched an episode – wait… TWO episodes – of Four Weddings? Something like that. Four brides compete for a honeymoon. They all attend each other’s weddings and rate them in different categories. Whoever has “the best wedding” wins the honeymoon. It’s kinda weird, but I got some good laughs watching it.
Now it’s your turn. What interesting things are going on in your life? Any new commitments? Goals? Crazy to-do list? Will you do NaNoWriMo with me (and my crew)? What tv shows are you enjoying right now?

NaNoWriMo Excitement

It’s been a while! I know!

ImageThere has been a lot going on. Without getting into too many details, there has been lots of figuring out, waiting games, wedding planning, NaNoWriMo prep, being a first-time ML for NaNoWriMo excitement, and on and on and on. The good news: EVERYTHING IS FINE. What is it that they say? Everything works out in the end, and if it doesn’t it’s not the end… Or something. ANYWAY. Lol. I’ve just gotta STAY CALM and KEEP LIVING. Or KEEP CALM and LIVE ON. (They should make one of those graphic thingies for that quote.)

Look what I just got:

EXCITEMENT!

I want my region (The Bahamas) to be AWESOME. I’m hoping to attract people who live in The Bahamas, are from The Bahamas, or wish they were in The Bahamas… Or people who just know I’m awesome, and hope to be equally awesome, and see this as a great way to do it. That means you, mkay? You’re included. If you’re NaNoWriMoing, definitely join the Elsewhere::Bahamas region. You can still be “homed” to whatever other region you like. You can join as many as you want. Ours will be awesome because we’re doing lots of Live-on-Twitter events. Wine parties, word wars, word sprints, and chats. You know you wanna!

I got the blog all set up, and I’m posting at least twice per week. In October, I’ll be focusing on planning and general NaNoWriMo prep. In November, there will be lots of motivation, fun(ny) posts, links to coolness, music suggestions, answers to questions, etc. The Facebook page is also up, and waiting for you to LIKE it! AND. Of course… TWITTER! Follow BahamasWrimos!

Let’s have some fun being crazy novel writing people! 50,000 words to write 30 days. WEEEEE can do EEEEET!

I have more things to tell you, but I let the NaNoWriMo excitement get a little out of hand in this post. There is more to come!

Tidbits:

  • Totally went to a bookstore to get ONE book. They didn’t have. Went to another. They didn’t have it either. I left with a bag full of stuff. Only spent $20, but still. It wasn’t the book I wanted. Lol. I LOVE bookish things!
  • I’m really excited about NaNoWriMo. Wait… Did we already cover that?
  • Wedding planning just got a whole lot better. I discovered the most amazing site ever. We can get pretty much every tangible thing we need. For less than a million smackeroos. Yep. That’s right. Spending less, and still getting a lot of AWESOME. Huzzaaaaah!
  • Football practice has been AMPED. UP. Trainer dude worked with us at the last two practices. Everyone had aching thighs. No one else openly admitted it, but even my bootay was a lil zingy. Haha. I have no fear. This bootay ain’ goin’ nowhere. (See what I did there? I rhymed.)
  • I’m reminded that I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to be on the GO, GO, GO! Not literally… Just BUSY. LOVE it. I thrive on having a million (good) things going on. It makes me feel so amazingly good and useful and of value. Crazy? Maybe. But I like iiiiit.

Hope you’re having a great week!

Tell me tidbits. What’s going on with you? Will you please join the NaNoWriMo fun/insanity? *smiles sweetly*

If you’re joining the fun, let’s buddy up! Find me here.

Monday Madness

It’s Mondaaaaayyyyy! Did ya know?

I feel all fgfkgjfjfgnb today. So much to do! I went through some websites that have information on submissions and contests, and FINALLY updated my little planner. I’ve given myself deadlines to get pieces done and submitted. I need to be ahead of those deadlines if I want time to post them to Scribophile to get feedback from other writers. I have at least one piece due every week for the rest of the year! Crazy, right? That’s not even including the assignments for my Writing for Children & Teenagers course. This should be interesting.

Here is some info on my work in progress:

  • Food Flash – It’s for a food festival, and they’re looking for short stories up to 2500 words on the theme of “Food & Drink”. There are no other restrictions, so I decided to make mine short and sweet. Well, it’s really not sweet. It’s kind of evil. But I like it! I’ve been getting crits on it for a few weeks now, and it’s ALMOST to where it needs to be. Before the end of this month, I’m going to have to let that baby fly.
  • Ice Cream Truck – Have I ever mentioned the super annoying ice cream truck that comes by our place EVERY day at the SAME time? It drives me crazy. I hate it. The music is awful. The other day, I was trying to have a little nap. Note that I am NOT a nap person. I HATE it. I was just SO tired from waking up a 6am to get a ride to work and working all day. Enter the ice cream truck. Playing CHRISTMAS music. I HATE Christmas music. It really annoys me. Anyway, I got my Neo, and wrote a little story. I was pissed when I wrote it, so it’s funny in a snarky sort of way, but it needs work.
  • The Other – It’s about a married woman who is seeing someone else. Her husband is also seeing someone else. Their marriage is pretty much over, but they still live in the same house. Things get a little weird. I wanted this to be a short, snappy piece, but a lot of the critiquers keep asking for more. They want to know more about the woman than I really care to tell. The story isn’t meant to be ABOUT her. I’m struggling with it. I like it the way I wrote it, but it needs to please the reader too. I’d decided to let it rest a while. BUT… It’s perfect (in theory) for a magazine’s theme that I want to submit it for. This week. GAH!
  • Comatose – A woman is in a coma, completely unresponsive. She gets an unexpected visit from the daughter she never had a relationship with. The daughter offloads and rants, but the woman can’t explain herself. I gave this one a looong rest. Time to look up the crits and polish her up. From what I remember, people wanted more backstory on this one too. To me, that’s not what  a short story is about. A short should be started as late as possible – close to the action – and focus on as short a time period as possible. I’m going to have a look at WHO is saying WHAT. If the people who want backstory are novel writers (primarily), I’m gonna have to veto their opinions. This baby needs to fly too!

That’s just what I have already written. There are some other ideas floating around. Can you tell how busy my week is going to be? It’s okay though. It’s about time I put more time and effort into what I REALLY want to do. It’s just difficult to balance a day job and home life with my work. I don’t want anything in the equation to suffer. This may take some trial and error, y’all, so excuse me for blogging far less than I used to. I’ll be back on track soon, I hope!

How about you? How is your Monday going? Any goals for this week?

Wordless Wednesday: Busy!

5 Things About My Day

  1. I forgot to bring my lunch. A plate of yummy food (from Sunday dinner, made by my great-gram) is sitting in the fridge at home. I just had yogurt. Before that, I had M&Ms. Before that? An apple. I’m clearly not staying here all day.
  2. I made an appointment to get my nails done. I haven’t had my nails done in over a year. I used to have them done regularly, and they were sooo nice. I got rid of them (gel nails) when I came back to Nassau because they don’t hold up well in humidity. I’m trying shellac nails this time. It’s some sort of special polish that doesn’t chip or anything. It’s supposed to last for two weeks. We’ll see! I’m thinking this may make me feel more ladylike and pretty or something? I don’t know. I’m really just grasping at straws, trying to find things to make me feel better.
  3. We need to go grocery shopping. I’m not sure how I’m going to fit it in. When I get off work, I’m gonna be starving. I need to stop for gas. I’m going to stop by the house and convince Babe to come running with us. Dazzler and I have a standing appointment for runs in the evenings after work. Do you see where grocery shopping can fit in? Me neither. Looks like a Wendy’s-for-dinner sort of night.
  4. Had a meeting. The first one in about a month. It was productive. There is a LOT going on right now. Our event is in NINETY-SIX DAYS! Holy mother! I think my work life is about to be in fast-forward. For 4 months.
  5. I have to pick up my dress for the funeral. Make sure it’s nicely pressed and everything. Mother picked up my shoes for me. YAY! Must remember to get cash to pay her back for ’em. I’ll post pictures of them at some point.

How are you? How’s your day going? What do you do to make yourself feel better when you’re out of it?

Hella Good!

Quick post here, quick post there. I know that’s the way it’s been lately. I’m really not trying to treat you like a stepchild. I’m not. It’s just so KAH-RAY-ZEH all the time now! I love it!

Sing with me now. “Ya got me feelin’ hella good, so let’s just keeeep on dancinnn’. Ya hold me like ya should, so I’m gone keeeep on dancinnn’!” Shake those booties. LEMME SEE THOSE BOOTIES IN THE AIR!

Okay… *sips water* I’m calm now. Here are a few quick things I wanna share with ya:

  • The time change has ruined my life. Okay, not really. But it DOES suck really, really bad. I hate it. Why the frig does the time keep changing anyway?! Who came up with that stupid idea? It sucks. Now it’s super effing dark when I get home in the evening. Know what that means? Very little gets done. I can’t go out and run. My eyes trick the rest of my body into being tired so I don’t get much writing done. Or cleaning. Or cooking. Or whatever.
  • I have a lot of writing to do. A LOT. NaNoWriMo is still kicking my butt. I need to give’er! I ONLY wrote on Sunday. That’s IT. SUNDAY. Pathetic! I have to catch up by the weekend, or it just won’t make any sense. I also have a short story to work on for a competition. I stopped at about 1900 words. It’s supposed to be 2,000-5,000 words. It’s looking like it’ll be closer to the 5,000. The story is pretty good, though I’m not quite sure which way I’m going with it. I’m confident that it will be done by the weekend. Then, I’ll toss it aside for a few days before I get to editing. I feel quite confident that the story itself (so far) is good. I’m just not convinced that it’s a WINNER. It needs to be a WINNER. Ya dig?
  • I’m off track with running. I’m not sure what I should do. It is REALLY too dark to run at night. It’s be too dark to go in the morning as well since I have to leave home so blasted early to get two buses to work. I need to get a car soooon. My life needs to get back on track.
  • Super excited about a Wine Dinner with Babe on the weekend. Our friend Vanessa is coming with us. We may pick up a stray or two to sit at our table. There’s a slight savings for tables of 4 or more. Either way, we’ll be there, and we will LOVE it. I’ll post the menu later.
  • I still love my job. It’s so great. My office is great. The people in the building are really nice, and always seem to be in a good mood. If they have problems, they obviously leave them at home. I like it!
  • Christmas is coming, fast and furious. We have less than two months to go, people! I don’t know if Babe and I are going to do the whole decorating thing. I hope so. I really like having a tree, and at least SMELLING Christmas. If we’re gonna do it, we should get on it soon. I’d like to order our hanging ball decorations for the tree within the next 7 days so they get here in time. Also, two places are having sales until Saturday. We need to get what we need to get while those sales are going on. I’ll see what I can do about getting a car for our errands. I’m anxious to get my shopping done. Online, online, online. Like I said, Dec. 1, I plan to be DONE. It even rhymes. I’ll be DONE on December ONE. Yep!
  • I went through a gazillion (read: a dozen… and a half) websites and copied, pasted, and emailed writing contest info to Babe. That way, it can get copied and pasted into Pages on zee MacBook, and I can access it at home. I’m really getting into this writing thing, y’all. It’s like, something was laying dormant in me for ages. All of a sudden, Babe gives me a few little talks, and I’m doing NaNoWriMo again, I’m writing a short story, and I’m thinking about all of the other stories I’ll be writing over the next few weeks. It’s fun! Did I forget how much I love writing?! I think I did… Anyway, I’m back in the saddle. YEEEE-HAAAAAWWWWW!

Well, there are just a few minutes left in my work day. I FINALLY got my delivery of office supplies, and this place needs some organizing and putting together. I also need to water my beautiful orchid. Even at the end of the day, things, things, things to do. I love it! I’m such a busybody. Hahahaha.

Hope your week is going SUPERRRRRRR!

Do you have any fun plans for your weekend yet? Are you participating in NaNoWriMo? Is there anything you gave up for a while, and need/want to get back into? What lights up your life? TALK TO ME!
